Kotter’s 8-Step Model for Successful Change

October 8, 2025

📕 One of my all-time favorite business books is Leading Change by John P. Kotter. The one in the picture is in Czech — because that’s the one I happen to have on my shelf — but I’m sure you’ll find your own language version at a nearby bookstore, no matter which corner of the world you operate from.

Kotter’s Leading Change is a timeless classic. It works just as well when you’re trying to shift the culture of a mid-sized team as when you’re leading a crisis task force in a global corporation. Field-tested by me — and it delivers

▶️ The heart of the book is Kotter’s 8-Step Model for Successful Change Transformation:

1️⃣ Establish a sense of urgency
2️⃣ Build a powerful guiding coalition
3️⃣ Create a vision
4️⃣ Communicate the vision
5️⃣ Empower others to act on the vision
6️⃣ Plan for and create short-term wins
7️⃣ Consolidate improvements and produce even more change
8️⃣ Institutionalize new approaches

🧐 Now, some critics argue the model is too linear — that change doesn’t always happen one neat step at a time, and different parts of an organization may move at different speeds. And you know what? They’re absolutely right.

But let’s remember — it’s a book, not a religion 😇 . It’s meant to inspire, not to be followed blindly. And Leading Changedoes that beautifully.

📚 For a business book, it’s a surprisingly good read — clear, engaging, and practical without ever feeling heavy.

Highly recommended. Because every change is possible — if we approach it with an open heart, solid preparation, and an awareness of how crucial communication and a culture of openness and accountability truly are. ❇️
